Perks: Free to attend and you'll get your own milkweed plant to take home so you can help monarchs in your yard.

Tip: Do you know how to tell a male from a female monarch butterfly? One way is that males have a black dot on the top side of their hind wings but the females lack these. These black dots contain pheromones the males use to attract the females. Learn more at the Journey North website .

A cornerstone of the festival is the traditional chicken dinner. Fast food booths, a dedicated dessert tent, and a beer tent are open throughout the weekend. A convenient drive-thru lane is available for picking up chicken dinners.

Amusements

High-energy carnival rides, midway games, and dedicated face-painting booths for children.

Gaming & Raffles

A continuous BINGO tent operates alongside other games of chance. The event features a standard 50/50 raffle alongside a general festival raffle with cash prizes.

Live Entertainment

Local musical acts perform nightly in the main tent, including scheduled performances by regional favorites like Arctic Clam and the Skittle Bots.

The Biggest Week in American Birding is a 10-day festival held annually in northwest Ohio, often referred to as the "Warbler Capital of the World." Organized by the Black Swamp Bird Observatory (BSBO), the event coincides with the peak of spring songbird migration, attracting over 90,000 visitors from around the world.

So you may ask, what is a warbler?

A warbler is a type of small, vocal, and highly active songbird known for its colorful plumage and insect-heavy diet. Birders often call them the "butterflies of the bird world" because they flit quickly from branch to branch and come in a dazzling variety of colors.

Locations (birds will be everywhere!)

The headquarters for the festival is the lodge at Maumee Bay State Park where visitors can register and attend talks, buy goods from a variety of vendors and more.
The city of Sylvania has a number of parks where the birds will be! Visit our Parks and Recreation page for a list of some good birding spots!
The Toledo Metroparks maintains vast acres of wild spaces where you can find birds!
The famous Magee Marsh Boardwalk hosts birds and birders alike, with different bird species seen along with birders from all states in the union and other countries! A must-see destination!

Spring is here, and it’s the perfect time to refresh your space! The City of Sylvania is hosting three events this season to help residents clean up, declutter, and dispose of unwanted items responsibly.

Free Yard Waste Pickup (City) - April 13-24
No need to buy brown bags or a green yard waste sticker. Use any type of
brown bag, open container, or cardboard box.

Shred Day - Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the Municipal Court Parking Lot (6700 Monroe St.).

Spring Unlimited Household Refuse Collection - Monday, April 27-Friday, May 1, 2026.
Household rubbish in garbage bags or cans – bags/cans cannot weigh more than 40 lbs.
Included Items: pieces of furniture, appliances, televisions, mattresses, box springs, bicycles, carpet (that is a maximum of 4ft wide - each piece must be rolled or folded, and then tied or taped) Wood that is no longer than 4ft in length and tied in 40 lbs. bundles - all nails/screws must be removed or pounded down.
This pickup does not include green yard waste.

Road Closure - Monroe St. over US-23

Starting Sun. March 8th for 150 Days

Monroe Street over US-23 will close Sunday night, March 8, at 9 p.m., and remain closed for 150 days. The goal of the construction project is to improve traffic flow and add capacity to one of the area’s busiest corridors. Other road details as follows:

Westbound on-ramp to northbound US-23 will permanently close Friday, March 6 at 9 p.m.
US-23 mainline will experience lane restrictions the weekend of Friday, March 6-Sunday, March 8, for traffic adjustments.
Acres Road remains open between Alexis Road and Monroe Street.
Northbound on/off ramps to/from US-23 will remain open.
Southbound on/off ramps to/from US-23 will remain open.

A staff member of the Black Swamp Bird Observatory will go over the importance of Northwest Ohio during bird migration. They will also talk about birds you can see in Ohio and how you can help them.

The gorgeous bird pictured below is a male Baltimore Oriole. You can attract these birds to your yard by offering some of their favorite things:

In mid-April and May set out fresh fruit. They love sliced grapes and oranges.
Offer a sugar & water mixture - 6 parts water to 1 part white sugar. AVOID mixtures that contain orange or red dyes!
Grape jelly can be offered, in limited amounts.
